SAM 84 CHAMPS – DALBY – 7TH/8TH/9TH.
JUNE 2008.
Another
year, and once again , the weather left a
lot to be desired.
Saturday dawned fine with light winds, but unfortunately, on the
Friday night, Dalby and surrounds, including the new field, received a
few mils. of rain, with the result that we
had to hold the first day’s comps. at the
old field. The Dalby folks, as usual rose to the occasion, and did us
proud. The Gordon Burford event was held first, and by the time that
was over, Ross and the Dalby stalwarts had mown a strip for the
Duration event. Results were as follows:-

Sunday
– well, we managed to gain access to the new field, and it’s the envy
of all flyers from metropolitan clubs,
I’m sure, and a great credit to the Dalby Club. But the wind beat us
this day – it blew at least 10 km. per hour too hard for old-timers.
Unfortunately, several contestants had commitments back home, and left
during the course of the day.
Monday
dawned overcast, but not quite so blowy, and the decision was taken to
fly as many of the remaining comps as possible. Texaco was first,
followed by the Climb and Glide, and the last that time would permit
was Antique 38, which kicked off about 2.45pm. Unfortunately, several
people, including your recorder, wanted to be out of Kangaroo country
before dark, and so the competitors for this last comp dwindled to
just 5. Results are as follows:-

In
terms of the flying, the weekend was not what it might have been, but
as a social occasion, I think most would agree it was a huge success.
Our Dalby hosts went out of their way, as usual, to make us welcome,
and originally I thought I would single out a couple of them for
special mention, but that would be unfair to the host of others
including the ladies who worked tirelessly to provide everyone with
nourishment at the 2 fields. We enjoyed a meal at the Chinese
restaurant on Friday night, a Barbecue at the field on Saturday night,
and a group dinner at the RSL on Sunday.
